Project Panthera (2008)
In August 2008, during the dispute over the Shareaza trademark, Shareaza developers publicly announced Project Panthera: a new open-source client under a new name. TorrentFreak reported its stated goals:
- continue developing the features users wanted from Shareaza
- support Gnutella, Gnutella2, BitTorrent and (later) eD2k
- replace Shareaza’s own BitTorrent code with the libtorrent library
- run on more operating systems, including Linux
- stay free of adware and bundled software, funded by donations
The article named a different domain as the project’s official site.
pantheraproject.net and Shareaza (2009)
By early 2009, shareaza.sourceforge.net redirected to pantheraproject.net, which then hosted the Shareaza website, wiki, forums and help. In June 2009, forum members described the pages on this domain as badly damaged and worked to save wiki content from search-engine caches. The official resources continued on SourceForge.
Later, the domain passed through other hands. Backlink records show a cPanel “account suspended” page around 2017–2018, an unrelated forum installation, and in 2025–2026 a large volume of automated SEO spam links that nobody associated with this project requested.
Who runs pantheraproject.net now
The current site is an independent publication about VPNs, privacy and open-source security tools, with editions in Turkish, Persian and English.
